what the door said
In this life, I want to be perfect. I catch myself trying to measure up to some standard in my head. That standard is what I think others expect of me. I have to keep learning that it is enough just be myself, whatever that turns out to be. I need to take a lesson from these old car doors. Look at this guy above - so beautiful and intriguing I could stare at him all day.
And take this guy. He pulls me in. I want to climb inside of those colors and lay down in the scratches, dents and rust. These doors are fascinatingly imperfect. They've been around a long time. They've traveled some bumpy roads to get so nuanced and sassy. They make no apologies, nor do they flinch when stared at. One can learn a lot from old doors.

toughie
This picture reminds me that we can generally handle more than we think we can. We feel fragile, but when we are tested, we discover that we're tougher than we thought, like a rusted old car that takes on dents without flinching. Before the accident two years ago, I lived in fear of bad things, like wrecks, broken bones or sickness happening. I am squeamish. Now I know that if something doesn't kill me, I can roll on through. I might take on a few more dings, but I've always been a bit dingy anyhow, so what's the diff?

a good day
What are you thankful for? Some days are for counting your blessings and having fun. Today is one of those days.
1. My baby girl finally, after 16 months in Portland as a working girl, came home for the weekend. She was tired. She took the red-eye. Whatever. She's here!!!
2. Homemade bread fresh from the oven.
3. Elaborate lasagna making extravaganza that went down here this morning. Fun. The results are in the oven.
4. Cute house I saw yesterday.
5. My new hairdresser's building. I got a good haircut yesterday. That is epic. Usually, when I say trim an inch, they cut off four. Usually, when I say do not give me thicker bangs, they turn my light bangs into a mullet. Why? Sibel listens. Sibel is awesome. First really good haircut in approximately ten years, no lie. Photos of new hair soon. Prepare yourself.

kitchen - boom, done.
| before |
| after |
On a sad note, when my next door neighbor went to bed last night, his schweet red truck with the fancy wheels was safely parked in his driveway. Or so he thought. This morning, when he tried to head to work, he found a sad truck sitting neatly on top of four cement paving blocks. No wheels. Seriously, where do knuckleheaded criminals get off thinking they can just take the property that others have worked so hard to obtain. Grrrrr. Makes me crazy.

kitchen paint, rusted cars, and the vein doctor
People, people, people. I've missed you. Painting the kitchen took over my life this weekend to the tune of seventeen precious hours. I'll post before and after pics tomorrow. It was the doors, woodwork, walls, pantry and all. Had to use oil based on the wood parts, which was your basic disaster. The stuff seems to glom onto me of its own accord. And it's so hard to remove. You have to use mineral spirits, which is so drying. Finally I stopped rubbing mineral spirits onto my legs when they reached the leathery texture of a saddle. I figured the remaining paint would eventually wear off on its own.
Of course, as luck would have it, today I had my appointment with the vein doctor... oh joy. My first such appointment, and he's grabbing my leg peering with his face about a quarter inch from the back of my calf and he goes, "What color paint did you use? It's the exact color of your veins and I'm trying to figure out weather this is a vein or a splotch of paint." So, apparently, my veins are svelte sage colored.
Oh well. I figure the guy probably needs an interesting challenge now and then to keep him on his toes. The bad news is that the splotch was a vein. Since the appointment, I've had that song stuck in my head... I'm sooo vein, do do do do. That's how my mind works. Anyhow, they tell me the bad vein can be gotten rid of easily, as they no longer strip the things but now zap them to make them die in place, so I guess that's one thing to be thankful for.
Anyhow, here are a couple more pics from the auto ranch. I like to think of all those old cars hanging out relaxing together in the sunshine. When you look at jalopies a lot, they seem to have faces and personalities.

on filtered sunlight
the light.
See
how
it hums
and
buzzes,
how it
vibrates
through the
leafy branches,
like
an
alligator
churning
his way
to
water’s edge.
